Ballyhane was set up in 1991 by Joe Foley on his family’s farm and it has grown over the last 21 years to become one of Ireland’s leading and best known stud farms.
Undulating fields and rolling paddocks are a feature of the three carefully maintained farms that make up Ballyhane, and together with modern, innovative facilities and dedicated experienced horse-people, the farm provides the resident horses every chance to fulfil their potential.
2012 was a highly successful year for Ballyhane and its clients, none more so than Steve Parkin’s Clipper Logistics whose horses are sourced, broken, pre-trained and boarded at Ballyhane. Unbeaten Cheveley Park winner Rosdhu Queen and Classic winner Electrelane are among Clipper’s six Stakes horses this year.
The last 21 years have been a fantastic journey thanks to the support of breeders and clients from all over the world, and exciting times lie ahead for Ballyhane as another 21 years beckon.
Joe Foley
Joe has had a lifelong passion for racing and breeding. After a stint at University studying Science, he branched into the field of horses becoming a mare-owner and pin-hooker at the tender age of 17!
After honing his skills at Coolmore for five seasons, Joe returned home to start the full-time business of Ballyhane. Starting with a 20 box barn and an outside covering shed, the farm has grown a lot since, and now has every facility imaginable.
"We now have the facilities here at Ballyhane to take a horse right through from its conception to the race-track. From the covering shed to the gallops, horses here receive exclusive service.
With these facilities, we have every ambition of continuing to improve our service and the quality of racehorses that we produce here at Ballyhane".

Jane Foley
Hailing from a family steeped in breeding and racing traditions, Flat and National Hunt, Jane has been surrounded by horses all of her life.
Jane competed in showing, show-jumping, cross-country and eventing competitions as a youngster, and also assisted at her family home, Sunnyhill Stud. Under the watchful eye of her father, Michael Hickey, she gained a wealth of knowledge in all areas of breeding and racing. Riding out with some Curragh trainers culminated with a second place finish at the Curragh racecourse on her only start, a record she hopes to improve on!
Jane has a BSc in Marketing and French and is a qualified Lab Technician. As well as French, she also speaks Spanish and basic German. Since marrying Joe, Janes horsemanship and valuable education from home, and further afield, has been a great asset to the growth of Ballyhane, particularly in the breaking, pre-training, breeze-up and training side of the farm. This is something that she enjoys and takes huge pride in doing well. The results so far speak for themselves!
